Miner Smith Bungalows Walking Tour

Saturday, June 1, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

$40.00

Join CSULB Professor and Miner Smith scholar Norbert Schürer for an intimate walking tour of Miner Smith homes clustered within a twelve-square-block area in the Belmont Heights neighborhood of Long Beach. The tour offers the opportunity to observe the exteriors of about a dozen Miner Smith homes and hopefully to visit one or two homes to see the extraordinary quality and diversity of Smith’s interiors.

Miner Smith was a self-taught builder and contractor who was responsible for about two dozen residences in Long Beach that he called ‘bungalow mansions,’ and that are arguably the most distinctive California Bungalows in Long Beach. His architectural style melded the Victorian style of the nineteenth century with the Arts and Crafts style of the early twentieth. The interiors of Smith’s homes included custom features such as built-ins, high-end lighting, ornate molding, painted walls, stained glass windows, and dramatic fireplaces—and for that reason he mostly attracted a high-end clientele. The most notable feature of Smith’s exteriors are his distinctive cast concrete porches, planters, and other ornate exterior details in the form of logs and branches. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to explore Miner Smith’s unique dwellings!

Please note there will be walking and stairs, wheelchair access will not be available . Please plan accordingly.
